It ends in a house filled with dozens of litter boxes, all stinking and heavy with waste, maggots thrashing desperately in the putrid stew, flies darting about like kamikaze pilots; and with hundreds of food-caked saucers stacked on the counters, on the floor, on top of other saucers; and with him crushed under a thousand furry bodies, gasping for air on his back, the rough scrape of their tongues on his arms, the weight of them on his throat, their purring in his ears like a drug, lulling him into serenity, as he tells himself: This is fine.
